Pilgrim Staff Making

Inspired by a traditional Pilgrim’s staff, there will be a range of craft materials and sticks for families to construct and accessorise their own walking stick. The Abbey was the final destination on a pilgrimage from Wareham to Shaftesbury to venerate King Edward The Martyr so Wayfarers travelled here for many centuries.

Pilgrims would carry useful objects, religious artefacts and talismans for their long journey tied to their walking staffs, along with souvenirs from their travels.This is a drop-in event from 10am to 4pm. There is no need to book, but children must be accompanied by an adult.
