About the Event

Malmesbury Abbey was, for many centuries, one of the great Benedictine monasteries of the West Country. A fragment of the abbey survives today as the parish church of the town. The monastery was closely associated in Anglo-Saxon times with the royal house of Wessex. It produced two of the most important writers of the Middle Ages: Saint Aldhelm and William of Malmesbury.  In this talk Tony McAleavy will share the results of a decade of archival research into this important institution, emphasising both the remarkable cultural achievements of some monks and the extremely scandalous lives of others.
