How to Join the Friends of Shaftesbury Abbey
The Abbey site has had a number of owners since it was dissolved in 1539. In 1985 the grounds were purchased by The Shaftesbury Abbey and Museum Preservation Trust Company Limited. The objects of the Trust are:
“To preserve for the benefit of the people of Dorset and the nation at large, the land, property and ancient remains known as Shaftesbury Abbey, Shaftesbury in the County of Dorset and to maintain a museum for the displaying of finds from the Abbey site.”
Today, the Trust, known as Shaftesbury Abbey Museum & Garden, is a self-supporting charity run by volunteers and relies on the income generated from admission fees from our visitors, profit from the museum gift shop, events and the support of the Friends.
Without the support of the Friends and over 60 volunteers the Trustees could not afford to open the Abbey for visitors to enjoy.
